Sept 4th POW

Ready, good. :-) Here is this weeks POW. Remember:
You may think about the problem.
You may try to solve the problem.
You may not post your responses until Friday while we are in the lab.

Mathematics Club Membership

Before the start of the fall membership drive, Mrs. Roberts wants to know how many students are in the Mathematics Club.

She asks the president of the club, "What's your membership?"

The president replies, "twice our number plus half our number plus a quarter of our number plus you is one hundred."

"Great," says the Principal, "that is exactly one more than one eighth of our total student enrollment here at Madison Number One Middle School."
Please address all of the following in your response:

1. How many students are enrolled at Madison Number One Middle School?
2. How many students are in the Math Club?
3. Write an equation that will help you either find or justify your answer.

Be sure to use comprehensive explainations when you explain how you found each answer. Good Luck. Ms. L.

How many students are enrolled at Madison Number One Middle School?

The number of students at Madison Number One Middle School is 280 students. How I got this is first by writing the equation, which is the answer to #3. The equation that I got is 2x+.5x+.25x+1=100. Then I used the guess-and-check method to find x. The first number that I tried was 20. I plugged 20 in and got an answer of 55, which didn't equal 100. Then I thought if I doubled the number, I would get relatively close. So I did 30, and got an answer of 82.5. I then thought about how much it took me to get from 20 to 30. It took me about 27. I knew that if I added 27 and 82.5, it would be too high, so I was not going to try a number over 40. So I tried 35, and the answer I got was 96.25, and I was very close! So then I tried 36, and that equaled 100!!! So the answer to number 2 is 36 students. Then the problem goes on to say that 36-1 is 1/8 of the school's population. So I did 35x8, and I got 280.

I rewrote the sentence “twice our number plus half our number plus a quarter of our number plus you is one hundred.” I then made it in to an equation. 100= 2x+x/2 + x/4 + 1 After this I started to plug in numbers I started with 30 and got ~ 96 then I plugged in 35 I got ~ 98 this was close so I plugged in 36 this got me 99 then I added the one and got 100. So I figured out there are 99 kids in the math club, and there are 792 students enrolled in school.

The POW for this week was about the number of students at the school and the number of students that were in the Math Club. The POW asked us to find three things. The first thing they wanted us to find how many students were enrolled in Madision Number One. The second part that we needed to solve was the number of students participating in the Math Club. The final problem we needed was to find an equation that worked with the situation.
The answer for number one is 280 students. the answer for the second question is 36 students. The final answer to the last question is 2x+.5x+.25x+1=100. To find the answer to the first and second questions we needed to find an equation first. We found the equation by rereading the president's reply. The symbols in our equaiton represented many things. 2x represetned twice the number of students in the math club, while .5x represented half of the total number of students in the club. .25x represented one fourth of the total numbe rof students in the club. One was suppose to represent Mrs. Roberts.
Next, with the equation, we started to plug in numbers. The first number we plugged in was 30. We just radomely chose that number. When we plugged in that number and solved the equation we noticed that is wasn't the solution. So, we then added 5 to 30 to get 35. We figured out that the answer was close to 35 so we then only increased by one. That gave us with the x of 36. We substituted and solved the problem. We found that 36 was the solution the the equation. That answer gave us both the answer to questions 2&3.
For question one, we subtracted one from the equation. That gave us with the answer of 99. 36 would still work in that equation. Mrs. Roberts said that the total number of students from the club was one more than an eighth of the total number of students attending Madison One. We then multiplied 36 by 8. That gave us the answer of 288 students.

The president replies, "twice our number plus half our number plus a quarter of our number plus you is one hundred."

"Great," says the Principal, "that is exactly one more than one eighth of our total student enrollment here at Madison Number One Middle School."

We solved the problem using these steps. We figured out, after using trial and error, that 36 was the correct amount of students that are in the mathematics club, and equal one more than one eighth of Madison one’s student total. Then, by subtracting one, it was 35, and, 35*8=280. So, the total number of students at Madison one is 280.
Solution:
36*2=72
36/2=18
36/4=9
72+18=90
90+9=99
99+1=100
36 is the amount of students in the mathematics club.

36-1=35
35*8=280

280 is the amount of students at Madison #1.

So this is what I did

36 * 2 = 72
36 / 2 = 18
36 / 4 = 9
72 + 18 + 9 = 99
99 + 1 = 100

99 * 8 = 792

Our problem of the week wants us to define the number of students in the Madison #1 Math Club and wants us to find out how many are in the Madison #1 School and write an equation for it.

We had to find a number that can be devisable by 4 and 2. That eliminated over 50 numbers. Then we decided to create an equation. Our equation was 2x+.5x+.25x+1=100. After that, we basically did process of elimination. We stared with the number 20 for variable “x”. That turned out to be 55, which was way to low. Then we decided to choose 40, when you plug in 40 in for “x”, it is 110. Since 110 was so close to our answer, we decided to choose 36. 36 turned out to be our answer. We deduced the answer by filling in the equation, 2(36)+.5(36)+.25(36)+1=100.

If we know that there are 36 math club students, and the math club is 1/8 of the school, then all we need to do is multiply 100 by 8. The answer to question 1 is 288.

1. How many students are enrolled at Madison #1 middle school?
There are 280 students enrolled at Madison #1. I got this by using the number I got for "x" in the equation. It says there is one more student in math club then one 8th of our school, so 36-1=35 and 35x8=280.
2. How many students are in math club?
There are 36 students in math club. I figured this out by using my equation (2x+.5x+.25x+1=100) and I guessed and checked what number could go in place of "x" and make the equation true. I started with 20... That was to low so I did 25, still to low, then 30... Once again too low I eventually got up to 36 and the equation worked perfectly. So there are 36 students in math club.
3. 2x+.5x+.25x+1=100 x=36

2. How many students are in math club?
There are 36 students in math club. I figured this out because 35 is one eighth of the total of students in the school and that is the total of kids in math club minus one. So to get the total of kids in math club, you have to add that 1 back to you total which equals 36.

3. Write an equation that will help you either find or justify your answer.
2x+.5x+.25x+1=100 x=36
2(36)+.5(36)+.25(36)+1=100
72+18+9+1=100

1 before I found this answer I found the answer for number 2, but I found this answer by using my other answer, which was 36, then subtracting 1 from it which would give me 35. I then multiplies 35 by 8 which ended up giving me 280, 280 being the number of students in the school.
2 for the answer for how many students were in the math group I guessed a number I thought it would be, 32 after I did the steps the question explained I only came up with 82.5, I tried again with 34, I then got 94, and I did it again. This time with 36, it came up to 99, so I added the 1 it said to and I got the 100. So there are 36 students in the math club.
3 the equation to help find the answer (that I used) was 2x+3/4x+1=100
2x+1/2x+1/4x+1=100 x=1/8+1 8*x-1=y
100-1=99= 2 3/4x 30x2=60 3/4x30=22.5 60=22.5=82.5
100-1=99=2 3/4x 34x2=68 ¾ 34=26 68+26=94
100-1=99=2 3/4x 36x2=72 ¾ 36=27 72¬¬¬¬¬¬+27=99 + 1 = 100
36-1=35 35x8=280 4

1) The total enrollment at Madison 1 is 280 students. This is found by the equation (mm – 1) x 8 = s when mm is the math club members and s is the total number of students. The mathematical process is this:
• 36 – 1 = 35
• 35 x 8 = 280

2) The total amounts of students involved in the math club are 36. This was found using the following method:
• (2x) + (1/2x) + (1/4x) + 1 = 100 is the equation.
• This simplifies to 2.75x + 1 = 100
• To eliminate 1, perform the inverse of addition to 100 (subtraction)
• 100-1+99
• To eliminate all values but x, divide 99 by 2.75
• 99 divided by 2.75 = 36

3) There are 2 equations for the scenario:
• For the students in the Math Club-
{(2x) + (1/2x) + (1/4x) + 1 = 100} = (2.75x + 1 = 100)

• For the total number of students-
(mm – 1) x 8 = s when mm is math members and s is total students.

this week's POW asks three questions. first it asks how many students are enrolled at Madison Number One Middle School. then it ask how many students are in the Math club. Write an equation that will help to wither find or justify the answer.

equation:
2x+.5x+.25x+1=100
2(36)+.5(36)+.25(36)+1=100
72+18+9+1=100
x=36
there are 36 students in the Math club.

first i had to figure out what number multiplied by 2, .5, .25 to make 100. and the number was 36. 72+18+9=99. then plus one equals 100.

Number of students enrolled at madison number one:

36*8=288

so there are 36 students in the Math Club, 288 students enrolled in madison number one and the equation is:2x+.5x+.25x+1=100

I plugged in 20,30,32&36 to this equation. Here is the work below
20(2)+20/2+20/4+1=?
40+10+5+1=?
40+10+5+1=56 Had to get a higher number
30(2)+30/2+30/4+1=?
60+15+7.5+1=83.5 closer but lower
32(2)+32/2+32/4+1=?
64+16+8+1=89 a little bit more
36(2)+36/2+36/4+1=?
72+18+9+1=100 Yes, I got it
After that I subtracted 1 from 36 and then multiplied that by eight
36-1=35*8=280

1. How many students are enrolled at Madison number one middle school? 280, I found this first by finding how many students are in the math club. I found that by taking a random number (36) and times it by 2, added 18, added 9, and plus one equaled 100, so I took 36 and took away 1 and then times it by 8 and I found the number.

We were asked how to figure out how many kids were at math club and how many were enrolled at the school. Then write an equation.

1. There are 280 students in the school. I got this by subtracting one from 36 to get 35. then multiplying it by 8.

2. There are 36 kids in math club. I got this by choosing numbers I though were close enough to the number and then finally cam to one.

3. The equation is: (36-1) x 8 is how to find the amount of kids at the school

Be sure to use comprehensive explanations when you explain how you found each answer. Good Luck. Ms. L.
I first try to find the number of students at Madison Number One. I found a hint from one eighth of our total student enrolment for Madison Number One. So I try to find out what number goes into 99 when it’s doubled, added by half of the number, and plus a quarter of that number is 36. I found that out by looking for multiples of 99, and found 36. Then I try to find out what 36 multiplied by 8 is, and I got 288. I got 36 by doing 36x2=72+18=90 and then add ¼ of 36 to get 9 and 9+90=99 so 36x8 is 288.

1. 288
2. 36
3. 36x2=72+18=90+9=99

1. There are 280 students Enrolled at Madison one school
2. There are 36 students in the Math club
3. s+s+.5s+.25s+1=t S=students in math club, T= total amount of students in math club.

I know that there is 36 students in the math club because I used guess and check. I started with ten and finally got to 36. 36+36+.5*36+.25*36+1=100.

I know that there is 280 students enrolled at Madison Number One Middle School because the pripal said that the total amount of students in the math club is 1 less than 1/8 of the total students in the school. That means 36-1=35 35*8=280 students total in the school.

1.280 students are enrolled in the school
2. 36 children are in the math club
3. For #1 the equation would be(36-1x8)

The problem is you have to find how many people are in math club by calculating the information that the student gives to the principal. Then you figure out the number of children enrolled into the school

In order to find the answers, you have to start out trying to find the number of people in the math club. you can multiply by 2, add half the number, plus a quarter, to figure out how many children are in the math club

We first started to use random numbers and calculating the answers we got that were wrong to try to come up with the correct number. (We use process of elimination)

We tried 36, and found out it equaled 100, so we knew it was 36.

Now that we knew 36 was the answer for number 2, we went on to number 1.

We looked back at the problem, and we just had to multiply x8.

We thought that we were right, but then we saw that we had to subtract 1 to get the answer.

We came up with 280 students for our final answer of the problem, and rechecked it to make sure it was right.

Answers
1. There are 280 kids in total enrolment at Madison number one.
2. There are 36 kids in the math club. I got this by using process of elimination. I started in the 3o’s until I got to 36 and found that it equaled 100. (36x2+18+9+1=100)
3. (36-1x8)
You have to find out how many people are in the math club by calculating the information that the student gives to the principle. Then you have to find out what the total student enrolment for Madison number one is by using the information that the principle gives the student.

In order to find the answers you have to find out how many kids are in the math club. You can multiply by 2, add half the number, then add a quarter of the number, and then add 1 to get the number of kids in the math club.

We first started to use random numbers and calculating the answers we got that were wrong to try to come up with the correct number. (We used process of elimination)

We finally tried 36, and found out it equaled 100, so we knew it was 36.

Now that we knew that 36 was the answer to number 1 we went on to number 2

We looked back at the problem and found out all we had to do is subtract the number of kids in the math class by 1 and then multiply it by 8.

We came up with 280 total students for our final answer. We went back and rechecked the problem and we were correct.

1: if it is 1 more than one eighth then 1-36=35 and 35x8=280 students enrolled at Madison one.

2: twice of 36 is 72 and half 36 equals 18 and one quarter of 36 is 9 so if you do
72+18+9+1+100 so the number in the math club is 36

3: Number one: s- n-1x8
Number two: m- 2n + .5n + .25n + 1
s= students enrolled m= math club n= number

1. 288 because 36 which I got by doing 36*2=72+18=90 and then add ¼ of 36 to get 9 and 9+90=99 so 36*8 is 288

2. 36 because 288/8 is 36

3. Write an equation that will help you either find or justify your answer y2 + ½ y + ¼ y =99

1. We have 280 kids enrolled at our school. We found it out by…
36 - 1 x 8 = 280

2. There are 36 kids in the math club. Well first we knew we had to figure out a number that was twice our number plus half our number plus a quarter of our number plus you is one hundred. So we started out with 25 and then went higher. We came to the number 36 and it worked!!! 36 x 2 + 18 + 9 + 1= 100

3. Math club: S=2x + .5x + .25x +1
Student Enrollments: S= mc-1(8)

1. There are 280 students at Madison Number 1
36-1x8=280

2. 36 students enrolled in the math club

First we new we had to find out a number that’s twice our number plus half our number plus a quarter of our number PLUS one would equal 100! So what we did was started with 25 then got higher when we discovered that the number wouldn’t work!!! FINALLY we found out that 36 worked for the problem…

36x2=72
72+18=90 (half of 36 is 18)
90+9=99 (a quarter of 36 is 9)
99+1=100

3. Students in math club
S= 2x+.5x+.25x

Students enrolled at #1
S= mc-1(8)

ALSO ANSWER TO NUMBER 2: First we had to figure out a number that was "twice our number plus half our number plus a quarter of our number plus you is one hundred." We started out with 25 and then worked our way up seeing that all the numbers didn’t work until we got to 36 and 36 worked.

36x2=72
72+18=90
90+9=99
99+1=100

1. There are 280 students at Madison Number One Middle School.
36-1=35
35x8=280

3. Math Club S=2x+.5x+.25x+1
Student Enrollment S=mc-1x(8)

1. How many students are enrolled at Madison Number One Middle School?
280 students are total at Madison Number One Middle School. I started at 10, then added a quarter then added half then doubled the original. It did not add up to 99 so I kept trying then got to 36 36x2 were 72 +9+18 is 99.

2. How many students are in the Math Club?
There are 36 students enrolled in the math club. 36 because if you do the problem it goes into 99 so 36 is the number of total students in the math club

3. Write an equation that will help you either find or justify your answer.
The equation is X divided by ¼ +½x2=T.

To me algebra is a whole bunch of missing numbers that need to be discovered. Algebra is a great way to find an answer to a missing problem and plus its fun!!! Using algebra is a huge deal because algebra is everywhere doesn’t matter if it’s hard or not it’s going to help you later on in life.

Geometry and algebra are connected in many ways such as finding missing angles, finding the degrees and length of angles.

Some examples: 33 size of angle 1, and the angle of the second is 67 what is the size of the missing angle? If one angle degree 100 and the second is 40 what’s the missing degree?

100-1=99x8=792+1=793 There is 100 people in the club if you minus 1 person you have 99 multiply by 8 because it is an 8th of the total amount of students which equals 792, but were not done there is one more person to bee added on because it says there is one more the an 8th so you add 1 to 792 and you get 973.
99 because one less of 100
100-x=m times t=y

First you subtract 1 to from 100 to get 99 which is 1/8. So I multiplied 99 by 8 and got 792+1 (the student from earlier) to get 793 students at Madison.

To get the number of students in the math club, I pick a number, 30, and took it thought the steps. It was too little so I tried 40, but it was too much, so I tried 35 but it was barley off. So when I tried 36 it was 100, so 36 is the number of students in the math club.

The equation I used is this, x=students x2+x/2+x/4+1

1. There are 792 students. 100-1x 8= 792+ 1 = 793 students at Madison1 Middle School.
2. There are 36 because 36x 2 + 18 +9 =99+1=100.
3. yx2+y/2+y/4+1=Y y=students
